I had Microeconomics from 9:30 to about 10 and then had Business Calculus from 11 to 12:15. Microecon looks like it's going to be pretty awesome; I like the teaching style of the instructor. I'd say the same about my Calculus instructor; I don't see any problems for a determined and self-motivated student like myself. The job fair will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 8th, and will last each day until 7:00 p.m. through Wednesday, September 10th.

Part-time and full-time positions are open to applicants 18 or older in every department of both the retail store and the Tracker Marine Boat Center, to include the fishing, camping, hunting, archery, footwear, apparel, gifts, marine accessories, boat sales, credit card sales, customer service, loss prevention, parts sales and receiving departments. Cashiers, greeters, marine technicians, boat detailers, and boat sales consultants are also being sought. Applications will be provided, can be filled out, and will be accepted at the job fair.

“We usually cycle through about one thousand a day with this kind of thing,” says Harley Willis, manager of the new store. Willis says that the applicants will also fill out questionnaires pertaining to their interests. “We can definitely use people who are passionate, whether that passion be hunting, fishing, even bird-watching.”

When asked about skill sets or prior experience that applicants may need for employment at Bass Pro Shops, he explained that “anybody can come in.”

“We're in the retail business to service the customer,” he went on, “Sure, it's great if they have experience in retail, or say if they're in the hunting department and they know all about ammunition, but we're going to train them with what they need to know.”

Benefits provided include an excellent wage potential, flexible morning and evening schedules, holiday pay, medical insurance, and associate discounts at Bass Pro Shops.

LeedsAlabama.com, an independent online news magazine for the community, cites the new store, which will cover 150,000 square feet, as the “catalyst” for the development of the Grand River Project, a 110-acre master-planned community at the intersection of I-20 and Highway 78. Without the project, says David Hogan, publisher of the web-magazine, this area of Leeds “would hardly have seen development in our lifetime.” Both the new store and the Leeds Civic Center are about 18 miles and 23 minutes away from the UAB campus, according to MapQuest.

Bass Pro Shops' website, www.basspro.com, lists 61 open and future stores. For a glimpse at the potential economic impact of the outdoor superstore, consider the fact that BPS took in an estimated $1.9 billion in sales from 53 open stores last year, an average of nearly $35 million per store, according to Wikipedia.

Manager Harley Willis estimated that 275 to 300 positions would need to be filled, and that the store would probably begin staffing around the beginning of October.

Willis was sure to reiterate the fact that experience and know-how will take a back seat to character in the selection process.

“We're looking more at the quality of the people.”

If you have any questions you can visit www.basspro.com/jobs. I've got my schedule ready; I'll be taking Sociology, Microeconomics, Music Appreciation, Business 101, Business Calculus, and, as I noted a few weeks ago, Aikido. I'm really excited to be taking classes of my own choosing--within the parameters of UAB's core curriculum, of course. I've got a really good feeling about adjusting, and my hours are great (I don't start my day until 9, and I'll end my academic day at 1). I've already CLEP'd English Comp. 101 and 102, so I can begin my English classes with literature next semester. Can I get a hoo-ha-no-remedial-grammar!? I've also already been accepted as a volunteer writer for the Kaleidoscope, the UAB student newspaper. I hate having to leave this area, but I know that those around me now will keep me in their hearts, as I will keep them in mine.

God has really blessed me in a huge way,
J. You gotta love it!

The GOP leadership in the House is stirring things up on energy independence, and I'm loving it. There hasn't been a signature issue on which Congressional Republicans have turned on the megaphone from the high ground in a long while, and, with 72% of Americans saying that prices at the pump are the biggest problem facing the economy, it's about time that they do take a strong stand. More than 50 Republican members of the House stayed after hours on Friday in protest of the 5-week adjournment, and many are coming back to Capitol Hill today. Check out the GOP's open letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:

An Open Letter to Speaker Pelosi

On Friday August 1, 2008, at 11:23 a.m., your Democrat majority in the House of Representatives adjourned the House for five full weeks.

House Republicans believe that Congress should not go on vacation until we take action to lower gas and energy prices for struggling American families.

For the last two months we and our House Republican colleagues have used every tool at our disposal to try and get you and your Democrat majority to vote on legislation to lower gas and energy prices by expanding environmentally sound domestic production of oil and natural gas, improving energy efficiency, and encouraging the development of alternative energy technologies.

Many of the proposals we have asked you and your Democrat majority to allow us to vote on are bipartisan proposals that we believe would enjoy the support of a majority of the Members of the Congress. Yet because you and your Democrat Leadership personally oppose these proposals, you are not allowing them to come up for a vote. This past Sunday, you even told George Stephanopoulos that you will never allow this vote to occur ….

In protest of you and your Democrat majority not allowing an up or down vote on producing more American energy, we and our House Republican colleagues were prepared to take to the floor on Friday, August 1, 2008, and speak to the nation. Rather than allowing that to happen you and your Democrat majority adjourned the House, turned off the television cameras, shut off the microphones and turned out the lights. Nearly 50 House Republicans remained on the floor of the House in defiance speaking to those citizens gathered in the galleries and to the media.

Today we have again returned to the Capitol to continue speaking to the thousands of Americans from all across our country who are visiting the Capitol. We would have preferred if instead we were joined by our colleagues to have a true debate on this issue that ended in an up or down vote.

We think it is unconscionable that Congress has gone on vacation before we have addressed the high gas prices that are crippling our economy and hurting millions of families. We are asking that you reconvene the House from your five-week vacation and schedule a vote on legislation to increase American energy production. Let us be clear, we are not asking for a guaranteed outcome, just the chance to vote.

Signed by: John Boehner, Republican Leader; Roy Blunt, Republican Whip; Adam Putnam, Republican Conference Chairman; Eric Cantor, Chief Deputy Whip; and Members of the House Republican Conference

Pelosi and the purse-lipped House Democratic leaders must be enjoying their vacation immensely, knowing that the people of south Alabama are only having to pay $3.75, as opposed to $3.99. Remember when I said that the gods may, in fact, be listening to our human plight at the pump? It seems that the god of the House gavel is not. 3 years ago, I would have expected the Republican majority to take a vacation with pressing issues on the table, and now we see the Democrats free for 5 weeks to take afternoon drives and fly private jets, paying for gas with their pocket change while the average American travels to the grocery store on his life-savings.

I suppose ineptitude comes in red and blue.
J. It reads below.

We go to liberate, not to conquer.
We will not fly our flags in their country
We are entering Iraq to free a people and the only flag which will be flown in that ancient land is their own.
Show respect for them.

There are some who are alive at this moment who will not be alive shortly.
Those who do not wish to go on that journey, we will not send.
As for the others, I expect you to rock their world.
Wipe them out if that is what they choose.
But if you are ferocious in battle remember to be magnanimous in victory.

Iraq is steeped in history.
It is the site of the Garden of Eden, of the Great Flood and the birthplace of Abraham.
Tread lightly there.

You will see things that no man could pay to see
-- and you will have to go a long way to find a more decent, generous and upright people than the Iraqis.
You will be embarrassed by their hospitality even though they have nothing.

Don't treat them as refugees for they are in their own country.
Their children will be poor, in years to come they will know that the light of liberation in their lives was brought by you.

If there are casualties of war then remember that when they woke up and got dressed in the morning they did not plan to die this day.
Allow them dignity in death.
Bury them properly and mark their graves.

It is my foremost intention to bring every single one of you out alive.
But there may be people among us who will not see the end of this campaign.
We will put them in their sleeping bags and send them back.
There will be no time for sorrow.

The enemy should be in no doubt that we are his nemesis and that we are bringing about his rightful destruction.
There are many regional commanders who have stains on their souls and they are stoking the fires of hell for Saddam.
He and his forces will be destroyed by this coalition for what they have done.
As they die they will know their deeds have brought them to this place. I haven't done nearly enough to spread the Word, and, for that, I'll be asking a few more pleas for forgiveness. My soon-to-be-former youth pastor's message tonight woke me up to something that is so common sense. Christianity is so much more than living a holy life and learning more about Christ and God, and I've been neglecting ministering to others for quite a while.

I haven't had a total sense of fulfillment lately, and, now that I think about it, I realize that it's because I'm just wasting the overflow of Christ's joy on no one. From here on out, I'm a bona fide evangelist.

Oh, yeah. I'm preaching on August 4th at the youth center. Come.
J. The straight-talker seemed to be on the right track when he told the NYT in a recent interview that he was against the adoption of orphaned or foster children by gay couples. But when the rainbow-pronged pitchforks were raised, McCain turned into straight-mashed potatoes. His campaign issued a statement today "clarifying" that McCain was a die hard federalist and believed that the issue was one to be taken up by the states.

I know that this is pandering by center-kicking on the part of the campaign. If you follow the first link, you'll see that, in the interview, McCain actually avoids having to say that he would rather orphaned and foster children stay in orphanages and designated homes than with gay parents.

Q: Even if the alternative is the kid staying in an orphanage, or not having parents.

Mr. McCain: I encourage adoption and I encourage the opportunities for people to adopt children. I encourage the process being less complicated so they can adopt as quickly as possible. And Cindy and I are proud of being adoptive parents.
From what I read, the Republican nominee was saying that he is an active proponent for adoption (by heterosexuals, as he says that he is against gay adoption in this very interview), and that he is also an active proponent of getting children adopted with as little red tape as possible. I don't read that he "believes that in those situations that caring parental figures are better for the child than the alternative" or where there are any traces of what "could have been clearer in the interview in stating that his position on gay adoption is that it is a state issue." Usually, when candidates want to seem good, calm moderates on an issue such as this, they will pick up the federalist flag while mentioning their own personal preferences as an aside. Barack Obama has played this strategy well, acknowledging his being a personal pro-lifer who just happens to believe that every state should be able to set their own standards on the issue. My hero! This is no different. McCain let his true beliefs (actually pure red) shine through and that is definitely a general election no-no.

I'm about tired of this whole "Each State can have its own moral society." scam.
J. On one hand, I would definitely be overjoyed to see less government regulation (self-sufficiency strangling) on energy. On the other hand, I just know that demand will take a hearty bounce and all "oil crisis" lessons will be forgotten once pump prices inevitably fall.

You may say, "Well, Jared, how can you say that you are a staunch proponent of laissez-faire when you don't support the consumer acting naturally?" Well, my friends, I'm not saying that I don't support a consumer increasing demand in response to lower prices. It all comes back to government crippling the market mentality of the consumer. When the state makes laws regulating or "stabilizing" the market, then the laws of supply and demand begin to take a back seat. When government restrains supply in such a welfare state as we have today, the consumer is unsure whether he should or should not change his habits of consumption, because there is the everpresent knowledge that government will eventually step in or step back to change the current supply problem. Why change your bad habits when you know that they'll eventually be facilitated?

Why stop belching at the table when you know that, eventually, belching will be okay?
J. I have to say that I'm in need of some solid research time, and since it is a freshman discussion that I will be taking part in on the first day of college, I will be doing solid research.

The book, Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change, is incredibly well-written by my meager standards. Her diction is great and her placement of quotes and data is so concise and thoughtful that, by page 199, one can hardly believe that their can possibly be any legitimate argument that man-made global warming is a non-factor. But "hardly" is the key italicized word in the previous sentence, and I think that I owe it to myself, to author Elizabeth Kolbert, and to those who believe climate change to be a krock to read at least one book, written just as well, to Kolbert's contrary. Of course, my research definitely will not stop there; my laptop will become invaluable in my search for information and in my formation of my stance.

My stance, as it stands, is that our burning, pumping, and wasting is harming us, in one way or another. I cannot be convinced that shelling out billions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere and thereby altering our breathing air is not, in some way, hazardous to our health. I also cannot believe that we humans, insatiably destructive creatures, are not seriously pushing our planet to the limit. How can we not be pushing the Earth towards some sort of disaster, if not global warming, at the rate that we're moving at?

I'm not a kool-aid drinker, but I do have common sense.
J. Let's take a look at those former presidents who served but were never there to "[order] the bombs to fall."

James Madison

James Polk

Millard Fillmore

Jimmy Carter

Ronald Reagan - kept out of combat due to bad eyesight

George W. Bush

Clark's wikipedia site says he voted for Ronald Reagan, and I wonder if, as a now-prominent pro-choice, pro-Affirmative Action Democrat, he would look back and scoff at Jimmy Carter for his lack of experience in the bomb drop-order departments.

Now let's look at Presidents who never served:

John Adams

Thomas Jefferson

John Quincy Adams

Martin Van Buren

Grover Cleveland

William Taft

Woodrow Wilson

Warren Harding

Calvin Coolidge

Herbert Hoover

Franklin Roosevelt

Bill Clinton

Again, I wonder what Gen. Clark's stance was when his liberal pal William Jefferson Clinton was campaigning for commander-in-chief. Was he hiding his feelings of ill-will towards the two-term president who fought claims of being a draft-dodger? Would he go back and say that FDR was unfit to stand at the helm of the world's greatest armed forces?

That whole "WWII" thing seemed to turn out alright without Roosevelt's ever having "been there."
J.
