This is your Democratic Party

These Marxists, interviewed by HotAirTV outside the '08 Democratic Convention, scare the living crap out of me. I feel like moving off to Gilligan's Island and putting all of my private property in an empty turtle shell.

I know I haven't posted much, and what I have posted hasn't been anything interesting. So sue me! I'm a college student now, though. I got things to do.

Thanks for your readership,
J. Sutton

Just to update you

First day

Well, I got done about 2 hours ago with my first day of academic classes. I had Microeconomics from 9:30 to about 10 and then had Business Calculus from 11 to 12:15. Microecon looks like it's going to be pretty awesome; I like the teaching style of the instructor. I'd say the same about my Calculus instructor; I don't see any problems for a determined and self-motivated student like myself. I've got Aikido tonight at 7; bring on the flips.

Just giving you the update,

I'll delete this soon...

Outdoor Superstore Coming to Leeds to Hold Job Fair

The Leeds Civic Center will be hosting a three-day job fair for Leeds' new Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, set to open in November. The job fair will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 8th, and will last each day until 7:00 p.m. through Wednesday, September 10th.

Part-time and full-time positions are open to applicants 18 or older in every department of both the retail store and the Tracker Marine Boat Center, to include the fishing, camping, hunting, archery, footwear, apparel, gifts, marine accessories, boat sales, credit card sales, customer service, loss prevention, parts sales and receiving departments. Cashiers, greeters, marine technicians, boat detailers, and boat sales consultants are also being sought. Applications will be provided, can be filled out, and will be accepted at the job fair.

“We usually cycle through about one thousand a day with this kind of thing,” says Harley Willis, manager of the new store. Willis says that the applicants will also fill out questionnaires pertaining to their interests. “We can definitely use people who are passionate, whether that passion be hunting, fishing, even bird-watching.”

When asked about skill sets or prior experience that applicants may need for employment at Bass Pro Shops, he explained that “anybody can come in.”

“We're in the retail business to service the customer,” he went on, “Sure, it's great if they have experience in retail, or say if they're in the hunting department and they know all about ammunition, but we're going to train them with what they need to know.”

Benefits provided include an excellent wage potential, flexible morning and evening schedules, holiday pay, medical insurance, and associate discounts at Bass Pro Shops.

LeedsAlabama.com, an independent online news magazine for the community, cites the new store, which will cover 150,000 square feet, as the “catalyst” for the development of the Grand River Project, a 110-acre master-planned community at the intersection of I-20 and Highway 78. Without the project, says David Hogan, publisher of the web-magazine, this area of Leeds “would hardly have seen development in our lifetime.” Both the new store and the Leeds Civic Center are about 18 miles and 23 minutes away from the UAB campus, according to MapQuest.

Bass Pro Shops' website, www.basspro.com, lists 61 open and future stores. For a glimpse at the potential economic impact of the outdoor superstore, consider the fact that BPS took in an estimated $1.9 billion in sales from 53 open stores last year, an average of nearly $35 million per store, according to Wikipedia.

Manager Harley Willis estimated that 275 to 300 positions would need to be filled, and that the store would probably begin staffing around the beginning of October.

Willis was sure to reiterate the fact that experience and know-how will take a back seat to character in the selection process.

“We're looking more at the quality of the people.”

Only two more days in Ariton

Yeah, I know that wasn't the type of title that you wanted to hear, but it's been a busy week.

I preached tonight, and I got a good reception. Hopefully, my words stuck for an ioda of a second to some of my listeners.

Also hopefully, I'll get some time in tomorrow to finally give you, my readers, some good thought fodder.

God bless,
J. Sutton

My first political cartoon...

I'm in the works to be put on the news and opinion sections of the UAB Kaleidoscope newspaper staff. I also may be an occasional political cartoonist for the paper. The only stickler may be how I drew the man representing the Saudis; by the way, there was no racial or cultural intent in how he is rendered.

Yeah. I'm an amateur.

Only 9 more days ...

... before I'm off to Birmingham. I've got my schedule ready; I'll be taking Sociology, Microeconomics, Music Appreciation, Business 101, Business Calculus, and, as I noted a few weeks ago, Aikido. I'm really excited to be taking classes of my own choosing--within the parameters of UAB's core curriculum, of course. I've got a really good feeling about adjusting, and my hours are great (I don't start my day until 9, and I'll end my academic day at 1). I've already CLEP'd English Comp. 101 and 102, so I can begin my English classes with literature next semester. Can I get a hoo-ha-no-remedial-grammar!? I've also already been accepted as a volunteer writer for the Kaleidoscope, the UAB student newspaper. I hate having to leave this area, but I know that those around me now will keep me in their hearts, as I will keep them in mine.

God has really blessed me in a huge way,

And here we have the Republican Ruckus on Video!

I love politics,
J. Sutton

Republican ire? You gotta love it!

The GOP leadership in the House is stirring things up on energy independence, and I'm loving it. There hasn't been a signature issue on which Congressional Republicans have turned on the megaphone from the high ground in a long while, and, with 72% of Americans saying that prices at the pump are the biggest problem facing the economy, it's about time that they do take a strong stand. More than 50 Republican members of the House stayed after hours on Friday in protest of the 5-week adjournment, and many are coming back to Capitol Hill today. Check out the GOP's open letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:

An Open Letter to Speaker Pelosi

On Friday August 1, 2008, at 11:23 a.m., your Democrat majority in the House of Representatives adjourned the House for five full weeks.

House Republicans believe that Congress should not go on vacation until we take action to lower gas and energy prices for struggling American families.

For the last two months we and our House Republican colleagues have used every tool at our disposal to try and get you and your Democrat majority to vote on legislation to lower gas and energy prices by expanding environmentally sound domestic production of oil and natural gas, improving energy efficiency, and encouraging the development of alternative energy technologies.

Many of the proposals we have asked you and your Democrat majority to allow us to vote on are bipartisan proposals that we believe would enjoy the support of a majority of the Members of the Congress. Yet because you and your Democrat Leadership personally oppose these proposals, you are not allowing them to come up for a vote. This past Sunday, you even told George Stephanopoulos that you will never allow this vote to occur ….

In protest of you and your Democrat majority not allowing an up or down vote on producing more American energy, we and our House Republican colleagues were prepared to take to the floor on Friday, August 1, 2008, and speak to the nation. Rather than allowing that to happen you and your Democrat majority adjourned the House, turned off the television cameras, shut off the microphones and turned out the lights. Nearly 50 House Republicans remained on the floor of the House in defiance speaking to those citizens gathered in the galleries and to the media.

Today we have again returned to the Capitol to continue speaking to the thousands of Americans from all across our country who are visiting the Capitol. We would have preferred if instead we were joined by our colleagues to have a true debate on this issue that ended in an up or down vote.

We think it is unconscionable that Congress has gone on vacation before we have addressed the high gas prices that are crippling our economy and hurting millions of families. We are asking that you reconvene the House from your five-week vacation and schedule a vote on legislation to increase American energy production. Let us be clear, we are not asking for a guaranteed outcome, just the chance to vote.

Signed by: John Boehner, Republican Leader; Roy Blunt, Republican Whip; Adam Putnam, Republican Conference Chairman; Eric Cantor, Chief Deputy Whip; and Members of the House Republican Conference

Pelosi and the purse-lipped House Democratic leaders must be enjoying their vacation immensely, knowing that the people of south Alabama are only having to pay $3.75, as opposed to $3.99. Remember when I said that the gods may, in fact, be listening to our human plight at the pump? It seems that the god of the House gavel is not. 3 years ago, I would have expected the Republican majority to take a vacation with pressing issues on the table, and now we see the Democrats free for 5 weeks to take afternoon drives and fly private jets, paying for gas with their pocket change while the average American travels to the grocery store on his life-savings.

I suppose ineptitude comes in red and blue.
