Top Democrat may back new offshore drilling: reportI guess some of the gods do keep a hint of the human trait compassion when they reach the hallowed halls of Capitol Hill.
I have mixed emotions about this. On one hand, I would definitely be overjoyed to see less government regulation (self-sufficiency strangling) on energy. On the other hand, I just know that demand will take a hearty bounce and all "oil crisis" lessons will be forgotten once pump prices inevitably fall.
You may say, "Well, Jared, how can you say that you are a staunch proponent of laissez-faire when you don't support the consumer acting naturally?" Well, my friends, I'm not saying that I don't support a consumer increasing demand in response to lower prices. It all comes back to government crippling the market mentality of the consumer. When the state makes laws regulating or "stabilizing" the market, then the laws of supply and demand begin to take a back seat. When government restrains supply in such a welfare state as we have today, the consumer is unsure whether he should or should not change his habits of consumption, because there is the everpresent knowledge that government will eventually step in or step back to change the current supply problem. Why change your bad habits when you know that they'll eventually be facilitated?
Why stop belching at the table when you know that, eventually, belching will be okay?
